Someone asked me recently, “Andy, when are you most happy in ministry?” My answer was quicker than they anticipated. I replied, “When all I do is set the table for students.”

Let me explain.

I have my most gifted student leadership team I’ve seen in my time at NU. What would be typical  for me to do a significant amount of the retreat teaching. But this year, I decided to turn it all over to the student leaders.  I coached them, trained them, and then got out of their way to lead.

And wow, did they lead well.

And I enjoy setting tables.

The commitment to student leadership is a hallmark of InterVarsity and the fundamental to my philosophy of ministry. Students finding their gifts to lead can do a better job than I or anyone in reaching the campus.

Through your partnership, Greek IV is making an impact on campus. We’ve been mentioned in the Daily Northwestern, engaged the campus on difficult issues like suicide prevention and human trafficking from an unashamedly Christian perspective. We have connections in now two-thirds of the fraternities and sororities on campus.

Greek IV student leaders have become among the most influential students on campus – from the emcee’s of the nation’s largest philanthropy, to directing one of the strongest university student initiatives to developing global change leaders, to the homecoming queen (that’s right!)

As we are moving to a season declaring more of who Jesus is to the campus, would you pray that we aren’t just a great group of leaders? The temptation of students is often to pursue community for community sake.

Pray that students build authentic friendships centered around the sharing the gospel with their friends who are far from God, and pray that every student gets a front row seat for a transformational experience in the life of a friend.

Who’s that good looking student leader of yours? Is she single? I bet she’s the homecoming queen, right?
